Something embarrassing happened to me.

There is something a bit embarrassing that happened to me. I almost didn’t want to share it with you because I am a professional organizer. This type of thing isn’t supposed to happen to professionals…

Last year when I was right in the middle of a divorce my papers piled up. This didn’t so much happen to me, I let it happen and I was embarrassed.

As an organizer, I didn’t think this could happen. I thought my paper system was perfect. All of a sudden I felt like a fraud. How could I be helping others as a professional organizer get their paper organized when my pile was growing and expanding to all parts of my home.

I truly was beginning to feel like a failure until my friend pointed something out to me. I can’t always be perfect. She wasn’t surprised about the paper at all. This made me realize that no matter who you are, sometimes in life, things get out of control. The paper system that worked for me for so many years, no longer fit my new life.

Then it dawned on me that I needed to take a step back, reevaluate and take my own advice. I have been using the same general method as a professional organizer with my clients for over a decade. And, this 5 step system has worked for all of them. From purging to organizing to making categories, but the most important step is creating the system. I am always telling my clients that they need an individualized and unique system that works for their life, not what works for their neighbor or brother.

I needed to take my own advice! The system I had set up as a new mom of twins over 7 years ago just wasn’t right for my life anymore. There was an influx of paper and a lot going on emotionally and physically with moving to a new home right smack in the middle of all of this.

I was my own problem, I was the reason the paper was piling up. I didn’t realize that my system wouldn’t work forever...and that was embarrassing.

But we’ve all been here. We’ve all gone through big life changes that have completely uprooted out systems and created the need for new ones.

Re-organizing and creating a brand new system was not easy or fast. I took each step and followed them just as I do with my clients. But you know what? Putting in that time and effort worked. My new system fits my lifestyle and I gained a new perspective on what my clients are actually feeling during their organizing process.

This is why I decided to put together a paper training course to host online. We all need a little guidance, support and accountability at times(even a professional organizer) and I wanted to provide it to anyone who needed it, not just those who I work with hands on. Paper is the biggest organizing hurdle for 9 out of 10 people and once you move past organizing your paper, everything else starts to fall into place.
